Over the span of an hour, their heated conversation had taken them from the kitchen to Devon's room on the second floor. Alex sat in front of his brother's computer, surfing the web. He sipped from his latest cup of coffee before relating his findings.

"Okay, it says here there have been tons of reported cases of levitation. A sixteen year-old named Clara Germana Cele, supposedly possessed by a devil, levitated five feet off the ground. That was in 1906. And a medium named Daniel Douglas Home levitated out a third floor window back in 1868." He scrolled down the screen. "But mostly it looks like it's been people caught up in a spiritual rapture. A Roman Catholic saint called Teresa of Avila levitated a foot and a half in the air. Jeez, that was for a half hour straight. And another saint, Joseph of Cupertino, levitated for two hours one time."

"Yeah, and didn't another guy feed five thousand people with, like, just two fishes and five loaves of bread?" Autumn remarked. "You don't believe that religious crap, do you?"

"If we're going to believe Devon and Grace, then there has to be a scientific explanation here! Maybe it's mind over matter. Maybe in the state they were in, Patrick and Kent were able to, I don't know, tap into some kind of psychokinetic power. Even some psychologists believe poltergeist activity is created by disturbed adolescents. And look at the religious zealots who manifest stigmata. They do that to themselves, maybe just through the power of their subconscious minds."

"Alex," Devon sighed, "I know you want to make sense out of this, but you're acting desperate now. What do you think? That Patrick made those claw marks appear on himself subconsciously, like stigmata?"

"He's right," Autumn said. "You just don't want to face the truth here. We've all met that bastard in our dreams now. The one time he really talked to me, I knew he would have hurt me if I'd been able to open that locked door."

Alex stared at the computer screen as if entranced. He muttered, "He tried to stab me with his claws in the zoo dream, but they were like rubber. He said he wasn't strong enough yet."

"Tell it to your friend Patrick," Autumn said. "And tell it to my boyfriend. Whatever he is, he's strong enough now."

Trisha was seated beside Grace on the edge of Devon's bed, rubbing the younger girl's back sympathetically. She looked up and said, "We can't any of us use the nightmare program again until we figure this out. We need to tell everyone at Mnemonic and Macrocosm, both."

"I told you," Alex groaned, "we need more information before we jump to conclusions! You want Macrocosm and Mnemonic to panic, act rash and abandon valuable projects when all the data isn't in yet?"

"We can't keep our theories to ourselves."

"What theories, Trisha? What theories do we really have yet, huh?"

Autumn interrupted them. "You said your friend at Macrocosm tried to find out about these Springwood Slasher murders online.
